PFU FSMA Webinars

The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is the most sweeping reform of our food safety laws in more than 70 years, was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it. Pennsylvania Farmers Union received a grant through the Local Food Safety Collaborative to work with and enable local produce growers and processors to comply with FSMA through specialized, needs-specific resources and training opportunities.

Navigating the Food Safety Landscape

PFU, in conjunction with the Chesapeake Foodshed Network, co-hosted this two-part food safety webinar series. For produce growers, now more than ever food safety certification is a major hurdle to entering and staying competitive in the wholesale marketplace. Increasingly, buyers are requiring 3rd party audits and frequently farmers are left to find their own way through a confusing and complicated food safety landscape. Add to this the implementation of FSMA and you have a perfect recipe for dismay and misinformation. This webinar series aims to demystify the mysterious, identify questions farmers and buyers should be asking each other, and answer some of the burning questions about FSMA and food safety audits. Instructors for the webinar are Lindsay Gilmour, specialized consultant in helping farmers work together to achieve food safety certification; and Jeff Stoltzfus, a Penn State Extension FSMA expert and Lead PSA Trainer.
